RIVER FOREST, Ill. – With the game tied at 75 and less than two seconds remaining, the Eagles forced a Dominican turnover and senior
Terry Licht sank a half court shot at the buzzer to give Benedictine the 78-75 victory over the Stars in Northern Athletics Conference action on Tuesday night.
The win moved the Eagles to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in NAC action, their fourth straight win. The loss dropped Dominican to 6-9 on the year and 3-4 in conference play.
Benedictine came out strong in the first half, taking a seven point lead on two free throws from
Cameron Snelling and a jumper from
Jerrell Tribble with 14:13 left in the half. The Stars slowly chopped at the lead and cut their deficit to one with less than five minutes remaining, but a layup from Licht put BenU up by three, 43-40, at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams traded leads back and forth until a three-pointer from Snelling gave Benedictine a 69-67 lead with five minutes remaining. Dominican's Jovan Turley answered right back with a three-pointer to regain the lead and neither team would score for the next two minutes.
A layup from
AJ Brown gave the Eagles a one-point lead but the Stars offense countered with a Milos Mandic three-pointer to go up by two.
With less than one minute remaining, Licht hit two free throws to tie the game at 75 and would go on to hit the game winning half court shot at the buzzer to give Benedictine the 78-75 win.
Licht and Snelling led all players with 16 points while Snelling collected his fourth straight double-double with 13 rebounds.
Nate Green had 12 points and eight assists while Tribble had 15 points and three steals. Brown scored a season high 14 points and had five rebounds.
As a team, Benedictine shot 47.6 percent from the field (30-for-63) and out-rebounded the Stars 37-34. The Eagles were 14-for-19 from the free-throw line (73.7 percent).
Dominican was led by Marquis Turley and Durelle Garmon with 14 points each.
The Eagles are back in action this Thursday when they travel to rival Aurora University for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. Wear red and show your support in enemy territory!
