LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team suffered its third consecutive defeat, dropping a topsy turvy 72-66 decision to Elmhurst College on Wednesday night.
The first half saw 10 lead changes and a tie. The largest lead was just five points by Elmhurst at 21-16 following a Zack Boyd layup with 8:55 remaining. Elmhurst led by four at the break 33-29.
Mark Pace dropped in a layup to cap a 6-0 run early in the second half and put Benedictine in front 35-34. Elmhurst immediately responded and eventually built the lead up to double figures at 62-52 when Jerome Robinson nailed a jumper with 4:38 left. Benedictine pulled within three at 63-60 when
Nate Green split a pair of free throws with 2:23 to go and had a chance to tie the game on the ensuing possession but Green's three-pointer fell off the mark. The Bluejays hit nine free throws to secure the win.
Elmhurst reached the line 28 times in the contest compared to just eight for Benedictine. Boyd led Elmhurst with a game best 21 points as the Bluejays shot 47 percent in the game. Pace led Benedictine with 17 points while
Jamison Montgomery notched 11 and
Raphael Oglesby 10.
Benedictine (3-5) returns to action on Saturday night at North Central College in a 7:30 p.m. affair.
