LISLE, Ill. – Before the men's basketball game on Wednesday night against the Dominican Stars the crowd honored senior
Cameron Snelling for becoming the 25
th player at Benedictine to score over 1,000 points in his career. Snelling had a stellar performance that helped to lead the Eagles to an 81-71 victory.
Snelling scored a season-high 29 points on 11-18 shooting. He also pulled down 11 rebounds which allowed him to tally his 13th double-double of the year. He added six assists and three steals as well.
The Eagles (15-6, 10-3) started off rocky, going down early by 10 in the first four minutes. However, with 9:36 remaining in the half, Snelling pulled off a powerful dunk that had the crowd on their feet and his team in the lead, 24-22. BenU would not lose the lead after this. They lead by as much 15, though Dominican (7-15, 4-10) frantically fought back late in the second half.
With the lead cut to three with 5:40 remaining in the game, Snelling stole the ball, drove hard, hit the lay-up and was fouled. He finished the three-point play, and the Eagles never looked back from there.
Senior
Jerrell Tribble played an outstanding game as well, posting 16 points on 8-13 shooting.
Nate Green also contributed 20 points, five assists, and a team-high four steals. He tallied only a single turnover, which is considerably impressive for a point guard. Senior
Terry Licht added 12 points of his own on 5-8 shooting. He was also one rebound shy of a double-double, with nine boards. He also dished out three assists.
Dominican's Jovan Turley led the way for the Stars with 24 points (8-14) and nine rebounds. Logan Harris posted a double-double pulling down twelve boards and putting up 14 points on 7-10 shooting.
The Eagles shot a formidable 48.5 percent from the field in comparison to the Stars' 30 percent. The Stars won the rebounding battle 40-32, but BenU crushed their opponents in forced turnover department, causing 15 turnovers to only four of their own. The Eagles collected nine steals as a team.
With this win, the Eagles remain confidently in first place in the South Division. Overall in the NAC, they sit at third behind Concordia Wisconsin (19-3, 14-0) and Edgewood (15-7, 11-3). The Eagles will play again Saturday, Feb. 12 against Rockford College in Rockford at 4:15 pm.
