Fond du Lac, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team rallied from down 14 points but a three to tie missed as Marian University posted a 67-64 win on Saturday.
The Eagles played from behind for most of the game, falling back 7-1 early before a 9-3 run tied the game at 10-10 when
Tim McGinty converted on a layup with 14:21 to play in the opening half. Benedictine went on to build a seven-point advantage at 24-17 as
Alex Edmondson drilled a three just past the midway point of the first half.
Marian scored the next 11 points, retaking the lead at 25-24 on a Jeff Harris three and extending the margin further when Cody Veleke also hit from bonus distance. McGinty finally halted the run with a free throw for Benedictine but Marian scored the final seven points of the half to lead 37-29 after hitting seven triples.
Benedictine pulled within seven early in the second half before the hosts again stretched the advantage to double digits, jumping ahead by 14 at 63-49 with jsut over six minutes to play. The defense tightened as Benedictine held Marian to just four points the rest of the way. The Eagles missed on two attempts in the final minute including a
Nate Green try at the buzzer to tie the game as Marian held on.
Jeff Harris led Marian with a game best 20 points. The Sabres (4-11, 1-6) hit 10 treys in the contest. Green paced Benedictine with 14 points. Edmondson added 12 and
Mark Pace 11.
The Eagles (4-10, 3-4) return home to face Dominican University on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Rice Center.
