LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team held on to topple Wisconsin Lutheran 55-52 on Saturday and return to the win column after six consecutive defeats.
Both teams were sluggish from the outset in a low-scoring but competitive first half. Benedictine shot just 30 percent in 20 minutes that saw three ties and seve lead changes but held a 21-16 edge at the intermission.
A three from Wisconsin Lutheran's Nate Bauer tied the game at 28-28 with 15:14 remaining. A jumper from Alex Edmondsen stretched the Benedictine lead to six points at 45-39 with 9:34 left. Wisconsin Lutheran again battled back, taking a 46-45 lead with another triple.
Jamison Montgomery put the hosts ahead for good with a jumper at 53-52 with just 2:34 to play and the Eagles were able to five attempts by the visitors to tie or take the lead and hang on for the victory.
The contest featured six ties and 13 lead changes. Benedictine shot 56.5 percent in the second half to help pull away and finished the game at 41.5 percent (22-53) with seven treys.
Kyle Bickler was the lone Benedictine player to score in doubles figures, matching the game high with 13 points after hitting three threes. Montgomery added nine while
Nate Green scored eight and dished out six assists.
The Eagles (4-8, 3-2) hit the road to meet Rockford College on Wednesday night.
