Women’s Tennis Splits Conference Matches on Saturday

The Benedictine University Women's Tennis team had mixed results in two Northern Athletics Conference matches on Saturday, falling to Wisconsin Lutheran 6-3 in the morning but sweeping Alverno 9-0 in the afternoon. The home matches for BenU took place at the Aurora Vaughn Center.

In the morning match against Wisconsin Lutheran (2-0), The Eagles saw their top three singles players drop their sets. BenU would respond, as Bhavana Movva, Kam Haifleigh and Anna Savio each won their sets as the fourth, fifth and sixth singles players. However, Benedictine would go on to drop all three doubles matches to the Warriors.

In the afternoon the Eagles would turn things around, sweeping Alverno (0-2) 9-0. Lina Savickas and Vivianna Iway gave BenU a great start, winning the first and second singles matches in three sets. After that, third singles player Antoinette Goyao swept her set 6-0,6-0, and Movva, Haifleigh and Savio followed by winning their second singles matches of the day.

Benedictine also took all three doubles matches. The first team (Savickas and Iway) and third team (Haifleigh/Savio) each won their sets 8-3, while the second team of Goyao and Movva swept their set 8-0.

"I was extremely pleased and proud of the girls today,” said Head Coach Jonathan Teune.  “I keep telling the girls that during any given match, our strokes may be off and we may not be having a great day, but we can always control our effort and attitude. Many of them played poorly early on, but stayed positive, kept hustling and were able to turn things around.  Based on today, I'm very excited to see where this season takes us."

With the Saturday split, the Eagles now sit at 1-2 on the season with a 1-1 record in NAC play. BenU takes the court next on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match against the University of St. Francis in Lockport, Ill.
