MADISON, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team opened the conference season with a 76-73 loss at Edgewood on Saturday afternoon.
Tyler Thurston and
Tim McGinty recorded back-to-back baskets to open the game, handing Benedictine a 4-0 lead. The early advantage reached six points five minutes into the half before Edgewood rallied to tie the score at 11-11. Trailing by two with just over seven minutes to go in the first half, Benedictine embarked on a 12-0 run to lead by double figures.
Michael Blaszczyk netted the first five points of the run. The Eagles led by as many as 12 in the first half, holding a 42-33 lead at the break.
Edgewood quickly moved within three early in the second half and took the lead with 14:20 left in the game as Benedictine scored just five points to open the second. The game stayed within single digits either way through the second. Edgewood was up by eight with 6:31 but Benedictine closed the deficit to just a single point with 1:28 remaining. Michael Woolf was also off target.
McGinty finished with 23 points while Woolf added 12. Benedictine shot 56.7 percent in the first half to race to the lead but finished the game at 48.3 percent. The contest featured seven ties and five lead changes.
Benedictine (1-4, 0-1) travels to Aurora on Tuesday night.
