A busy week is ahead for Benedictine University Men's Basketball, as the Eagles will play three Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games in five days. The team will travel to Rockford for a
Tuesday night matchup (7:00 p.m.), a home match-up against Dominican on
Thursday (7:00 p.m.), and a home game against
Marian on Saturday (5:00 p.m.).
BenU (5-9, 3-6) sits at eighth in the NACC and is coming off of a week in which they split two matchups against Wisconsin NACC schools. The Eagles hosted Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday, winning a 61-58 nail-biter behind 16 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists from freshman guard
Michael Blaszczyk (12.6p, 5.9r). On Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Mequon, Wisconsin to face Concordia-Wisconsin, falling 90-76 despite 18 points from junior big man
Tim McGinty (15.8p, 6.2r).
Benedictine faces a
Rockford (8-7, 4-6) team on Tuesday that can really score the basketball. The Regents have scored the fourth most points in conference play this season (763) and fourth in points per game (82.3). Also, Rockford is second in the NACC in rebounding at 41.1 boards per game. However, they also have allowed the most points in the NACC (809) and is tied for last at 84.5 points per game.
A big reason for the Rockford's scoring is senior forward David Dixon. He's first in the NACC in scoring (21.5ppg), third in rebounding (9.3rpg), and seventh in three point shooting (42.9%). Dixon only played in one of the two games between the schools last year, the match-up at BenU in which the Eagles won 75-64. Rockford defeated the Eagles at Rockford earlier in the year 77-75, as a last second three-pointer by
Alex Edmondson rimmed out.
On Thursday, the Eagles welcome a
Dominican (1-12, 1-8) squad to the Dan and Ada Rice Center that has struggled this season. The Stars began the season on a 10-game losing streak before winning at Wisconsin Lutheran on January 4 74-71. Since, they have lost by single-digits to Edgewood and at Lakeland.
Dominican is playing better basketball of late, and a big reason why could be the play of senior guard Taylor DeRoo (13.1p, 3.4r). After missing five straight games, he's scored 32 points and attempted 19 free throws in the three games since the New Year. He was a big reason why the Stars defeated the Eagles in both meetings last season as well, as he tallied 44 points and 12 rebounds in the two contests.
Saturday presents a stiff test for the Eagles, as the team takes on NACC leader
Marian (9-4, 8-1). The Sabres began the year 6-0 in NACC play before falling 106-101 at Aurora on December 20. The Sabres both the conference's sixth leading scorer in senior forward Sam Koslowski (16.9p) and another high scorer in senior forward Cody Veleke (14p, 5.2r). Both players also shoot above 50% from the floor.
The Eagles and Sabres have already met once this season. On January 4, Benedictine fell at Marian 82-74 despite 22 points from McGinty. Koslowski scored 32 points for the Sabres, his season-high.
