FOND du LAC, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team opened the 2014 portion of the schedule by falling to Marian University 82-74 on the road.
Benedictine did not lead in the game but made a valiant comeback attempt in the second half after falling behind by 16 points. The Eagles tied the game just once at 2-2 following a pair of early free throws from
Tim McGinty. Both teams were sizzling from the field in the opening 20 minutes with Marian shooting 63.3 percent and Benedictine hitting at 59.1 percent. The difference was the three-point arc. Marian drilled eight first half triples.
After trailing by 16 early in the second half, the rally began when down 15 at 61-46.
Jon Bock drilled a three to ignite a 13-1 run. McGinty capped the initial run with a layup to bring Benedictine within 62-59 just past the midway point of the half. Twice the Eagles were within a single point following a McGinty layup and two free throws from
Michael Woolf. Leading 68-67, Marian netted eight straight points to move in front 76-67. The lead again reached double figures in the final minutes.
Benedictine finished the game shooting 55.1 percent from the field. McGinty paced the Eagles with 22 points with Woolf adding 16.
John Dodson scored 10 off the bench. Benedictine did not have an answer for Sam Koslowski, who tallied a game best 32 for the current leaders of the NACC.
Benedictine (4-8, 2-5) will return home on Wednesday night to meet Wisconsin Lutheran at 7:00 p.m.
