The Benedictine University men's basketball team has just one game remaining on its regular season schedule. On Wednesday night, the Eagles will head north to Rockford University to take on the Regents.
Wednesday night's game is big for the Eagles, as a win clinches the team a share of the 2014-15 NACC Regular Season Championship. However, the contest has no bearing on Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament seedings or matchups, as both teams already are locked into spots. At 16-8 overall and 14-5 in NACC play, the Eagles will be the two-seed in the NACC Tournament and will host either Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Marian University, or Edgewood College on Saturday depending on the rest of Wednesday night's results.
Rockford's record stands at 7-17 overall and 6-13 in conference play. Currently in ninth place and three games behind eighth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran with just one game remaining, the Regents are eliminated from NACC Tournament contention.
Wednesday: at Rockford (7-17, 6-13), 7:00 p.m.
After qualifying for the NACC Tournament for five of the last six seasons, the 2014-15 campaign has been an interesting season for the Regents. On January 7, Ryan Rebsom, who had led Rockford for 10 seasons, resigned as Head Coach, prompting Assistant Coach Andrew Weber to take over the role on an interim basis. The Regents were 3-10 at the time of the switch and have gone 4-7 since, with the team's last win coming in overtime (97-91) at Dominican University on February 4.
Rockford and Benedictine met in Lisle back on January 13, which was Weber's second game at the helm. BenU built a 31-point lead in the second half and cruised to a 78-58 victory, as
Tim McGinty reached Benedictine's 1,000 point club in the contest. The senior big man led the Eagles with 16 points and seven rebounds in the game, while
Tahron Harvey chipped in 14 points, four rebounds, and five assists off the bench.
Benedictine holds a four-game win streak over Rockford, with the Regents' last win in the series coming back on December 8, 2012. The Eagles lost 77-75 and had a three-point shot rim out as time expired.
