The Benedictine University men's basketball team led for over half the game and held an 11-point edge early but lost for the first time this year, suffering a 77-65 setback at home to visiting Dubuque. Dubuque won 19 games last year and is the alma mater of Benedictine head coach
Jordan Townsend, who also coached at Dubuque from 2016-21.
Benedictine led 59-54 with 6:53 left in the game but managed just one field goal and two points in an almost seven-minute stretch as Dubuque seized control with a 16-2 run. Benedictine, who battled foul trouble for much of the game, led by double figures three times in the first half but Dubuque answered and grabbed the lead on a dunk just before the break. Benedictine shot 39.1 percent in the game but was just 3-of-15 from three-point range.
Trevor Montiel led the team with 16 points while
Brandon McCoy added 11 off the bench before fouling out. Dubuque held a 37-32 edge on the glass to become the first team to outrebound Benedictine this year.
Benedictine (2-1) is off until next Tuesday when the annual battle for the Warden/LaScala Trophy takes place at home against their foes from just minutes down the road, North Central.
