The Benedictine University men's basketball team was able to hold off a comeback attempt from Aurora to tally a 75-73 home win on Wednesday night and break a three-game skid.
Benedictine trailed only briefly in the contest, posting one of their best shooting performances of the season. Following a tight opening six minutes, Benedictine used a 6-0 run to take the lead for good.
Tanner Resch netted four of the six points as Benedictine led 15-10 with 13:25 to go in the first half. Moments later
Patrick Mayfield connected on consecutive triples to put Benedictine up by eight with 12:11 left. Resch notched four straight as Benedictine opened a 12-point edge. Aurora battled to within four but Mayfield hit a three before the halftime buzzer as Benedictine led by seven at 36-29. A strong start to the second half saw Benedictine lead 50-36 on a jumper from
Aidan Werth. Aurora tied the game with 7:52 left but Benedictine responded with eight in a row. Benedictine led by nine with 2:57 to go but Aurora kept on the pressure, coming all the way within the final score in the last second.
Benedictine shot 51.9 percent in the game. Resch led all scorers with 26 points. Mayfield tallied 25 and reeled in 10 boards for his second double-double of the year. Benedictine turned the ball over 14 times, leading to 20 points, and were outrebounded 35-34.
Benedictine (6-13, 8-7 NACC) hosts Lakeland on Saturday afternoon.
