Ed earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Sociology minor. He went on to earn his Master of Science from Benedictine in 1996 for Counseling in Psychology. On the field, Smith set numerous records as a quarterback and still holds several single season and career marks. Smith threw for 2,770 yards in 1992, the single season standard. He completed 184 passes out of 345 attempts, both single season marks. Benedictine won seven games in his final season, the most wins by a single team during the 1990s. Smith threw five touchdowns in a game against Trinity in 1992, establishing a record that was matched only in 2003. Smith also holds career records for pass attempts (862), completions (456), passing yards (6,734), total offense (6,599), and passing touchdowns (47).
