Gene was an assistant football coach from 1969-1974 during some of the best years in Benedictine program history and also served on the faculty. The 1972 team finished with a record of 9-2, establishing a program record for wins which has only been equaled once. The 1972 team won nine consecutive games. Collectively, teams won over 30 games during his time on staff. Cavich coached the defense, guiding a 1971 squad that led the nation in many statistical categories. Cavich helped direct the first NCAA Division III All-American in program history in 1972, Mike Rogowski.
